“Protecting the right to education for the most excluded children.”
Peace Himalaya earlier built a temporary learning center and provided a volunteer teacher because there was no school and no teacher in the village. This project has been transitioned to school expansion project.
Around 100 Chepang families were displaced by floods and wildlife attacks seven years before. Their new settlement had only a small, incomplete school. Many children still risked their lives walking back to the dangerous old village.
Out of 300 children, only around 125 attended school, others ended up in casual labour in the river side business, domestic worker, early marriage, carpet factory or restaurant work.
Peace Himalaya is now working to:
- Build additional classrooms
- Provide teachers where needed
- Relocate all children to a safe learning environment
- Upgrade the school beyond Grade 5, gradually turning it into a complete education hub
- Motivate families to prioritise schooling over child labour
