Dear Friends and Supporters, Peace Himalaya recently distributed school backpacks, uniforms and stationery items to over 230 children, including those from the marginalized Chepang community and slum settlements in eastern Nepal. A particular Chepang village, where people still live semi-nomadic lives, faced full displacement from their village in remote Makwanpur following devastating floods and landslides seven years ago. Although many families resettled, the only primary school for Chepang children remains in the old location, forcing nearly half of the enrolled students to walk through jungle terrain, risking floods and wildlife encounters. The other half of the children remain out of school, often involved in labour to survive due to extreme poverty and lack of government support. Meanwhile, children in the eastern slum areas live in slightly better conditions but still lack essential resources for quality education—though a new computer lab has recently been established for them.
